During the past week, I began taking a anatomy and physiology course. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect. I thought the course was going to get straight into learning anatomy, but the first lesson was about learning to plan ahead. They taught us about "metacognition", which means to refer to your awareness of yourself as a learner and your ability to regulate your own learning. (not done)

NOTES ON COMPUTER BIAS
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithmic_bias
Algorithmic bias describes systematic and repeatable errors in a computer system that create unfair outcomes, such as privileging one arbitrary group of users over others. Its found across platforms and can have impacts from unintentional privacy violations, to reinforcing social biases of race, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity.

^biases in computer systems have been developed preexisting, technical, and emergent.
Preexisting bias has its roots in social institutions, practices, and attitudes. Technical bias arises from technical constraints or considerations. Emergent bias arises in a context of use. In this research, they used the computerized airline reservations systems as an example and how Sabre and Apollo were claimed to be reservations systems that were biased. (both of their algorithms were controlled search and display functions) This made me realize how difficult it is to identify biases in computer systems because I didn't think there were any from just booking a flight or going to a travel agent.
